FIRST PRINCIPLES TRAINING

London's elite boxing and conditioning coaching. Providing 1-2-1 coaching, small group classes and corporate experiences.

OUR ETHOS

First Principles Training was created in response to what we percieve as a flaw in the Fitness industry; personal trainers caring less about a client's progress than the risk  of them having a tough session and deciding they don't fancy PT.

We don't like that. We think that if a client asks for something that will get them results, that's what they expect, even if it's hard work! FPT embodies the idea that your trainer should be doing more than accompanying you on your workouts; we want our sessions to take you above and beyond what you could ever hope to achieve on your own. From the complete beginner who wants to learn to box or lift weights, to the experienced gym goer looking to go to the next level, we will set a new bar in work rate and intensity for your training. Head trainer Chris explains:

"Everyone knows boxing is a tough sport, but it's not just physical abilities you need- mental toughness is just as important. We want to give clients a glimpse of the many different types of fitness training a pro fighter uses, while all the time re-enforcing the need to focus, commit to the moment and believe you can break your own limits."

THE PRINCIPLES

The principles at the heart of our brand draw on the ethos and attitudes which underpins perfomance in all professional sports. We will help you develop these mental attributes through your training over time.

1. How hard are you trying? Be honest with yourself about your efforts.

2. There is no progress in comfort.

3. Have purpose. Know why you are training and what you realistically want from it.

4. Train to your limits. You will tend to stop short, so let your trainer find them.

5.  Consistency is King. Results don't happen overnight or if you keep missing training.

THE COACHES

THE FOUNDER- CHRIS

A former undefeated pro boxer and licensed amateur coach, Chris founded First Principles in 2013 after giving up his career in international development to pursue his dream of fighting pro. Chris coaches out of a high end boxing gym in Central London.

Chris practised Chinese Martial Arts from the age of 6 and then took up freestyle kickboxing at 15, before converting to boxing at 19 years old. Chris boxed as an amateur through university but in 2012 started training with pro boxers and left his career to fight.

Chris' whole life has come to revolve around boxing; coaching, training and fighting. With a combined 27 years of experience in combat sports and physical conditioning, he founded First Principles Training hoping to bring the best of what he has learnt to his clients:

“I want the people I train to achieve the goals they come to me with, but along the way hope I can widen their horizons. What attracted me to this game is the massive role that self-belief plays in any fighter’s training and performance- it’s this ethos that I hope to pass on to my clients.”

THE MUAY THAI KING- SHANE

Shane is a decorated professional Muay Thai fighter and is the current 4 nations Muay Thai champion at his weight class. Having started as an 8 year old amateur boxer in Cork, Ireland, Shane fell in love with Muay Thai in his early teens.

With a schooling in boxing, Shane proved to be a dangerous Thai fighter, racking up 25 professional fights and winning most by KO using hands and elbows. Qualified in Health and Exercise fitness from the university of Limerick and a holding British Weight Lifting Strength and Conditioning coaching certificate, Shane's approach to training spans both fighting and non-fighting disciplines.  Now based in London and coaching at Bloodline Gym in Clapton, Shane is passing on his love for these disciplines to his students-

I fell in love with Muay Thai and have never looked back. My training has taught me to focus my mind and stay calm in pressurised situations.
My love for lifting and functional fitness fits well with the First Principles ethos and I love the focus on mental training in the pursuit of client’s goals. I really enjoy working with the huge variety of clients London has to offer, and I think my clients can feel that passion. Oh, and I love cookies.
